In this video, I show you how to make simple but delicious apple turnovers using either pie dough or puff pastry dough.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb (453g) Tart Apples (preferably granny smith)

  • 2 Tbsp (28g) Unsalted Butter

  • 1/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar

  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp Freshly-Grated Nutmeg

  • Pinch of Kosher Salt

  • 1 Recipe All-Butter Pie Crust

STEPS

  1. Peel and dice apples.

  2. Heat a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat, and add 2 Tbsp of unsalted butter. Cook for a few minutes until butter is completely melted and beginning to brown.

  3. Add the apples to the pot and stir.

  4. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to pot, and stir to thoroughly coat the apples

  5. Roll out pie crust into a large rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick, then cut into several smaller squares (this recipe will make about 6 small turnovers).

  6. Pile a small amount of the apple mixture into the center of each square of dough, then fold the dough over to close off the turnovers.

  7. Place dimples around the perimeter of each turnover to seal the edges, then transfer them to a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a nonstick baking mat.

  8. Bake at 400F until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.

  9. Allow turnovers to cool for at least a few minutes on a wire rack before enjoying.
